Commentary
It was cold and sunny today. About 20% of the route was off piste in woodland.
The hazards were slippery mud in places, tree roots and large stones verging on being rocks. I was wearing Gel Trabuco 12 trail shoes so it was far less hazardous than it would have been with Gel Nimbus 26.
There were quite a few testing hills but they weren’t as bad as on the Caterham to Purley route. There was a good view of Epsom Racecourse from Tattenham Corner.
I made a navigation error in Drive Spur in Kingswood. I walked down the cul de sac and didn’t spend enough time looking for the footpath. Instead I backtraced and walked the long way around. I could see where the intended footpath was to my left as I walked past it down the hill.
Near the end I failed to follow the pre-planned route and ended up having to walk in a fairly busy B road which had minimal verges. In this situation I’m very cautious and escaped unscathed.
I arrived at Chipstead station to find a 50 minute wait for a train to London Bridge. I spent most of the time in a local cafe instead of getting cold on the platform.
